DVD players
I am pissed off with (almost) all the DVD players at home. Firstly, the one in the living room is working but the remote control is dead and the AV channel has been taken over by the new mio TV system. Then the DVD player in my parents' room is also not working because they haven't used it for the whole year. The only workable DVD players are in my room but no one wants to watch movie in my room. ARGH!!! PISSED OFF!!!
Twilight
On the other hand, I am glad that I finished reading Twilight series and surprisingly, I hate Bella. Oops. She is just too unreasonable and unpractical most of the time though she is very innocent and kind. Please don't kill me if you like her. (=p)
Sims outing
Last Friday, we had a cousins outing. For once, all the Sims cousins were there and together with my 4th aunt and uncle (who decided that their younger son needs supervision). We decided on bowling but when we were there, all the lanes were full so we thought of catching a movie but all the time slot of those that we hadn't watched were off therefore we went to the arcade. We played a few games but the most memorable game would be the basketball match. Hehe. We waited for the basketball machine to clear before we had a Sims tournament. (=p) About 2 to each machine, we started playing and screaming. Something we don't do every time we meet. Haha.

Then a call came and told us lanes were cleared for us so we went down to play bowling. Hehe. I am not a good bowler and I don't bowl very often so it was not surprising that I was really lousy at it. We had a really great time there with all the screaming, cheering and clapping. Then 2 cousins left for another appointment while we continued. After bowling, we had dinner at KFC, courtesy of my uncle and aunt, before we headed back to the arcade to finish the remaining tokens. Then another 2 cousins left with my uncle and aunt before we decided to head back to the east for a movie, Bedtime Stories. The movie marked our last event of the day.

I am definitely looking forward to the next Sims outing. (=D)

Getting old

I seriously think I am getting old. I don't have the energy to play with my little nieces and nephews anymore. Just now my aunt brought her grandchildren to my house and I seriously don't know what to say and play with them. Plus, I am tired from no reason. LOL.

On last Saturday, I also had no energy to play with another little niece who is 2 year-old. I am seriously getting old. I don't have the energy to run after them anymore.

There is an old woman here blogging.

Boring life

I have been lazing around lately. Didn't do anything special. Everyday is manga, dramas, movies and surfing the night.

I found a good manga, Skip Beat. It is about a plain girl who wants to take revenge on her childhood mate whom she had a crush on for many years but he betrayed her feelings by using her to take care of his daily life while he make his fame in the entertainment industry. She swore to take revenge by entering the entertainment industry but met many obstacles while trying to create a name for herself and a talented actor who despises her motive for joining the industry. Can she make a name for herself in the industry and take her revenge against the man who cheated her feelings and outdone the talented actor?

-

I also watched a really funny Korean movie, Baby and Me. It is about this high school student who is suddenly burdened with a baby who is claimed to be his. He has to take care of this troublesome baby and at the same time, manage his life without his parents who are on a runaway. As such, he started his life as a single daddy and he started maturing at the same time.

Exams and after exams

Exams are finally over. I am glad and yet very worried. I did not do well for my mid-term and the final papers were difficult. I really hope I can at least get B for Econs, C for JS and pass for the other two since I am going to S/U both. *Praying hard*

My bro is back!!! He came back on the 29th November which was a few days before my last paper. I couldn't wait for the end of my paper and it is finally over. My last paper ended on Monday 7pm but I only reached home at about 9pm as I couldn't get onto the first bus and had to wait very long for the next bus. After I reached home, bro transferred several files to my laptop to entertain me. Hehe. Slept at about 12 midnight and woke up early the next day to laze around and to Singtel to recontract my plan though I was mentally and physically tired.

I am still tired today but I started spring cleaning my cupboard, the boxes under my bed and also the drawer holding my dramas. I am done with them and tomorrow I will start clearing my wardrobe and start fishing for my stuffs that are lying around the house. Hehe. After that is time to buy New Year clothes. Time passes so fast. Can't wait for New Year to come.

Taking a short break

Glad to say I have finished writing notes for 3 modules and managed to read most of the pages required with the exception of Economics. Hehe. (=P) Just imagine that Economics has 29 chapters in the textbook minus 2 chapters not covered and you will praise me for reading 14 chapters (more than half).

I have been inconsistently writing notes and reading the textbooks, which causes me to think that it is Thursday today and I started to panic as I have yet to start studying for my paper this Friday. So scary!

Anyway, I am just up here to tell you that "I AM STILL ALIVE THOUGH I AM HAVING DIFFICULTIES CHANGING UP WITH THE DATES AND DAYS!" (=p)

Ending this post with some pictures taken with my EA1101 peeps.

Only 3 guys in my class after Huimin's Hide left.

The scandalous couple.

Still alive

I am still alive in case you are wondering where the 'hell' I went to. (=P) I am just too caught up with school and revision for the upcoming exams. I promise a lengthy update after my exams and occasional updates in between. (=>) Off to bed. Tata.

Fainted again

I fainted in the toilet. I was feeling faint about 3 seconds after I sat down on the toilet bowl and I decided to get out of the toilet but I got more giddy as I stood. After washing my hands and preparing to walk out of the toilet, I started moving backwards and I don't remember anything until I regained conscious and realised I was sitting on a pail and the toilet door was wide open. I saw my brother walking towards me and with his help, I managed to walk out of the toilet and I saw my mum coming towards me. She shouted for my dad and helped me out to the living room but I think I lost conscious again until I was in the living room. I attended to myself at the sofa as I am now an expert at situations like this.

When I was feeling faint, negative thoughts were flashing in my mind. "What is I die just like this?" "What will happen to my family and friends?" I was really scared and desperately wanted to shout for help. Now I know how vulnerable is life.

Hectic week

Since mid-term is over, it is now the beginning of project time. This week is so hectic. So many projects that need to be done. SSA, IT, EA & JS projects.

SSA: - 1st meeting this Tuesday
- Each to find information on either economic or social impacts
- Information to be sent to one another this Sunday 2359
- To meet again

IT: - Meeting on this Wednesday
- Finished correcting my part of the presentation
- Waiting for my group mates to tell me how is my part and what to improve on
- Start on assignment next week

EA: - Only received the instructions today
- Paired up but haven't start planning for any meeting

JS: - Several meetings online and offline
- Outline is good and need to start looking for sources
- Photocopied some information from a book yesterday
- To meet up next week

Projects aside, a little joke to liven up this blog.

Suggested by Hui Min on Monday, we went to the Engineering school canteen for lunch and got a big shock when we saw the queues. They were super long and very messed up. As we were walking and trying to find the shortest queue to join, we overheard this girl asking the guy in front of her a question. The conversation went like this:

Girl: "Excuse me, may I know what are you queuing for?"
Guy: *Shrugged his shoulders* "I don't know."

LOL!!! We burst out laughing the moment we walked past them. That was how bad the queues were and we left immediately for Mcdonalds'. Haha.

End of mid term

I had my last mid term paper yesterday. Among all the papers I sat for, the first paper is the worst and the last is probably the best. I don't even feel like talking about the first paper. I just hope that I will at least get a C and not anything below it. (T_T)

Though I thought I had been well-prepared, I have been thrown off-guard by the papers. They are so different from the tutorials and lectures. Sob. Worst of all, some of the questions do not make any sense to me. ARGH!!!

This the probably the worst mid-term I ever sat for.

I am really glad that it is all over and I can finally start my projects and try to pull up my grades.

Need to go listen to JS webcast. Tata.

Recess week

I should be studying and fully utilising this week to catch up with my reading but I am obviously not doing that. I have been watching dramas and surfing the net for the past few days. Erm... I admit that I did study a little bit but that is only writing notes and I only completed the notes for two modules. I want to cut ties with dramas but I can't. Haiz.

Met up with the girls on Thursday and yesterday.
Thursday:
Had Subway and we chatted about various stuffs till 11+pm. I really enjoyed the time we spent together and am so glad that our friendship is still strong even after 7 to 9 years. Hehe.
Yesterday:
Mae's 21st celebration. It is earlier by 2 months. LOL. Cause she will be leaving for Japan next Friday 1am and won't be back till next year August. I will miss her. Waiting for people to send me photos. Hehe.

By the way, I set a new record. I drank 4 cans of Red Bull this week because I want to keep myself awake throughout the day and it did work. Need to buy more Red Bull tomorrow. (=D)

An appeal

Dear friends,

please do not call me after 11pm and especially when you can't find me online at that time. I am a light sleeper and the moment you wake me up from my sleep, I will not be able to fall back to sleep again. This is the reason why I am online now at 3.17am although I will have a super long day today.

Therefore, I appeal to you not to call me after 11pm. If you have anything to ask me, please sms to me and I promise to reply the sms on the next day.

I don't have any lesson on Wednesday so I will wake up late every Wednesday. Please do not call me early in the morning on Wednesday as I will usually spend Tuesday night trying to complete my readings which is a hell-lot.

So, don't call me after 11pm every night and before 10am on Wednesday.

Thanks & Regards,
Kelly

Scary

There is only one word to describe the English lesson today. "Tense"

Our tutor came in with a 'black' face and started handing out our synthesis assignment. I got 58% for the assignment and the highest was 62%. After giving back our assignment, the tutor started scolding and asking us what was it that we don't understand about synthesis. So scary. The whole class were holding our breathe, fearing that any wrong reply will trigger another explosion. It was really that bad and we had to do our presentations after the moody confrontation. I was constantly looking at the tutor's face for any change in mood. She kept a stern face all the time till Hui Min's and Amanda's presentation. I was so thankful that she finally smiled.

All I can say is, the English class today is so stressful!!!

Studying feels great!

As my title suggests, I am really happy to be studying again. Having spent more than a year idling around and working aimlessly, studying with an aim feels wondeful. Strangely, I enjoy running around and chasing after buses to get from one school to another. (=D)

BUT, studying also has its cons. I haven't been getting enough rest, watching the dramas and movies that I wanted to watch and I feel that my eyes are going to pop out soon. Lol.

Luckily, we are having a one week break next week before our mid-term. Hehe. I can finally wake up late. (=P) Looking forward to recess week. (=D)

NUS Anime Fair

I am beginning to love NUS. LOL. But only the Anime club. (=P) I didn't know that there was an Anime Fair since Wednesday till I saw the notice today and it should have ended by now. The first thing I saw at the Anime Fair was not some Anime character or merchandise but OTAH PRATA and CLOTHES.

OMG! It sounds so wrong. Haha. Before I started looking for Anime related stuffs, I was shopping for clothes. (=P) Really dirt cheap. Abercombie denim skirt for only S$12 and tees at prices cheaper than Bugis Street. I bought 2 tees for $10.

Then I started walking around the fair and saw many Anime merchandise. OMG! They are all so pretty and I just want to bring them all home. Hehe. I ended up buying 2 merchandises before I finally persuaded myself to leave the fair or not I would be so broke. Haha.

The 2 merchandises I bought are not for myself but my 2 brothers. Lucky them. (=D)

Sorry, I forgot to rotate the picture but I am just too lazy to upload it again. (=p) I bought this watch at the Anime Fair for my brother. Hehe. It is really pretty. Take a look at the closed up picture below.

AND, I bought this for my bro. It is just so pretty and stylish that I know I must buy. (=p) By the way, the colour is closer to the first picture but the second shows the swords clearer.

Catching up

I am starting to catch up now. Finished my JS reading 2 and almost done with my Changing Landscapes reading. What I need to do this week is to finish JS reading 3 and 4, E-commerce readings, Econs tutorial, Synthesis assignment and Preposition presentation. I will also need to start on my projects but basically I am catching up. So happy about it. (=D)

I am off to study. Tata.

Proper update

Just finished my Econs and English module tutorials. Still have JS (Japanese Studies) and E-commerce discussion questions to do, the piling readings and CL (Changing Landscapes) webcast to watch. At least I managed to finish 2 out of the many. (=P)

A few events to update on.

My primary school is gone. This picture was taken by my friend about one or two weeks ago and now the building had been demolished.

Last Friday was my grandmother's birthday and we had a mini gathering cum celebration at one of my uncles' house. The picture was taken when my grandmother was talking to my brother through MSN. (By the way, that is my laptop. Haha.)

Two weeks ago, I went to KBox with my cousins to celebrate the birthday of one of them. That is the only picture I took because I did not charge the batteries. (=P) For details, please go to Shermaine's blog.

Lacking of updates

I haven't been able to update because I am sick, busy and slacking. I know the latter two are contradicting but I was really busy the initial few days of the week and after I fell sick, I started slacking.

I have been down with fever for the past three days and it feels horrible. I forced myself to go to school and attend lectures and tutorials even when one minute I was feeling cold and another feeling hot. Slacking during the last three days resulted in lots of work to be done. All my readings and tutorials are not done, I have yet to listen to all the webcast to refresh my memory and the projects are killing me.

So far I am only making progress in the English module presentation and Japanese Studies project. I am falling behind for the rest. I have yet to start on the synthesis assignment due on the 12th of September and Changing Landscapes project. Stress. I need to buck up and work hard.

Flying papers

Papers were flying around in my house for the past hour. Reason being - I am printing all the 'sh*t' for school. (=P) I think I printed at least two hundred odd pages and used up about a hundred pieces of paper. I suddenly have a sense of satifaction. Erm... not sure why. LOL.

I haven't started on tutorials yet and have yet to finish all the readings. Hopefully the readings will be done by this weekend and will not pile up as the workload gets heavier.

Off to do my tutorials. Tata.

Angry Angry ANGRY!!!

This is the first time I yelled and quarrelled with my father since poly. I hate it and the reason is because he feels that I deserved everything that is happening to me in NUS.

He said I was too proud resulting in me having to drop Korean. He doesn't even understand anything and NUS refuses to give me 100% refund for the module. Then I can't get my Economics tutorial slot. Not a single slot was assigned to me during the two balloting rounds though I ballot for more than 6 slots.

Just my second week of school and all these happened to me. I really hate NUS now.

Honesty is no longer a virtue?

I have been precluded from 'Korean 1' because I have some prior knowledge of the language. I thought honesty is the best policy so I decided to declare that I know some Korean but definitely not everything or majority of the syllabus that 'Korean 1' will be going through. Upon hearing that I have some prior knowledge, the lecturer told me to leave the room as I am not allowed to take the module. Can you imagine how shock I was? I crawled out of bed at 5am, made my way to school at 6am and reached school at 8am for the Korean lecture to be told that I can't take this module.

In the first place, the website that introduces the module did not state that it is strictly for complete beginners. I don't think it is my fault at all for choosing some module that I have interest and slight knowledge about. I feel very upset over this and couldn't concentrate on the other lessons for today. I wasn't the only one with prior knowledge, practically the whole class has prior knowledge and some even took Korean for a whole year as compared to me who took merely 10 lessons of conversational Korean.

The difference between us is just that I am honest and they are lying. So why am I being penalised for being honest? Honesty is no longer a virtue? Or should I put it that it is no longer a virtue that NUS accepts? So, now, I learnt a new thing about NUS - never be honest.

1st week of school

My first lecture in school is so boring. The lecturer is basically going through all e minor stuffs that can be found in IVLE (something like Vbus and Blackboard in TP) during the 1st hour. I thought undergraduates should be independent learners and are supposed to find out these stuffs themselves? I also noticed that many do not pay attention to the academic calendar and solely relied on what was told during the orientation talk. These many includes both poly and JC graduates. I realised that I am pretty different from the majority or at least for now.

After the first lecture in NUS, I had a 2-days break before my second lecture tomorrow. I had to do 26-pages of reading before tomorrow's lecture. I am very angry as this reading material was only posted late in the evening yesterday. If you want your students to do some reading before the lecture, post it up earlier and not just 2 days before the lecture. I only managed to read 1 out of the 26 pages and some background information from Wikipedia. I have a feeling that I will not be able to finish it before the lecture tomorrow.

I am not happy with the way the lecturers in NUS work. ARGH!!!

We Got Married

If you are thinking shot-gun, etc, I am prepared to give you a kick in the butt. LOL.

"We Got Married" is a Korean reality variety show. In this show, they paired up 8 celebrities and they need to play as newly wed. There is no script to memorise and they are playing themselves although they do not know each other beforehand. You will get to see how 4 couples lived together and play as newly wed. Really entertaining.

My favourite couple in the show - Andy from Shinhwa and Solbi from Typhoon.
Andy has a reserve personality. He does not knows how to express his love and feelings for someone. Solbi, on the other end, has a very bright personality. She fears nothing and did not hide the fact that she admires Andy for a long time from the start of the show. Slowly they begin to open their heart to one another though they are not real couple.

The most unrealistic and romantic couple - Alex from Clazziquai and Shin Ae.
Shin Ae is a model who experienced many criticism from the public. She is very shy even after several episodes. When she finally started to get used to Alex who is a very romantic and reliable guy, Alex had to leave the show for his own album. The episode which they parted is really saddening but they came back together after a few episodes.

The most awkward couple - Hyun Joong from SS501 and Hwang Bo from Chakra.
They are a couple to replace another couple that 'divorced' after a few episodes. Hwang Bo is 6 years Hyun Joong senior. They are strange together but really make me laugh a lot. Hyun Joong, 22 years old, is a guy of little words but very detailed and humorous every time he speaks. Hwang Bo is very worried that SS501 fans will be angry at her for taking advantage of Hyun Joong so she is very careful that there is as little skin contact as possible. Though they are awkward together, they are very funny and entertaining.

The most dangerous couple - In Young from Jewelry and Crown J.
In Young has a very fiery yet cute personality. From the 1st episode till the current episode, there is not a single episode that I did not see her tantrums. Crown J also has a fiery personality but he is very accomodating. He tries to give in every time In Young is showing her angry face but he will always have a fight with her first. (=P) But strangely they looks very compatible together.

I have been watching the show for the past few days.

I don't look 21?

I finally cut my hair today. I kept telling myself I want to keep my hair long like it was when we were still in secondary school but yet I really love the length of my hair during Chinese New Year. After debating it in my head, I decided to cut it short. Reason being, it will be neater and will not need much maintenance.

So I asked my mum which salon should I go to as the one I frequent moved without me knowing. My mum decided to accompany me to this salon where there are only 2 good hairdressers. She was there so that I will not end up in the hands of some amateurish hairdresser. Hehe.

After the haircut, my brother joined us as he also wanted to have a new haircut (ok, maybe not so new but shorter haircut). While waiting for my brother, the hairdressers (my mum's friends) asked how old am I. They couldn't believe that I am already 21. They told me that I look I am still in secondary school. Erm... I don't know if I feel insulted or happy at the compliment that I looked younger than my actual age.

That is not all. Yesterday, my Artemis Fowl books finally arrived and I was wearing my Meridian JC PE tee so the guy asked if my principal is still Esther Lai (the principal when I entered Meridian). Well, that means I looks like I am only 17 or 18 to him or maybe the tee looks too new?

Do I really not look like I am already 21? Is that something to be happy about or sad?

3 in 1 out

Received the result of my bidding yesterday. I managed to win 3 modules (Japanese Studies, Economics and Korean) and I lost Communications, and New Media by only a few points. Will try again during Round 2A and hopefully I get my Financial Accounting module. Hehe. (=P)

I know I came from Accounting and Finance and taking this module may sound very wrong but I believe that it will be different in university and I wanted to give myself a easier time so I will be taking it. (=D)

Bidding begins

I have been sitting in front of my laptop since 8am today because today marks my first ever bidding in NUS. I am so nervous and need to keep monitoring my bidding. I am so worried that I won't get the modules that I bid for. 2 of the 5 modules (1 is still on advance bidding) already experienced number of bidders more than the vacancy available.

Bidding is almost like stock exchange except that your blood pressure goes up and will not go down until the end of the bidding. Yes, I can monitor and read timely updates but from 1pm tomorrow onwards till 5pm, it will be close bidding meaning I won't be able to see most of the crucial bidding information. Leanne told me to anyhow throw my points but I really have no idea if I can out-bid the others. I only have 600 points to bid for the modules and there are people throwing 300 points for just 1 module. Sob.

I already spent 3 days in NUS and now 2 full days in front of my laptop monitoring the bidding. This is just so tough. Sigh.

I also realised NUS or maybe specifically FASS is very bias towards the JC graduates. (-.-') I don't like this feeling. No idea why they don't wish to acknowledge the fact that there are also a handful of poly graduates among the freshmen.

For the 3 days, I tried 2 different routes to NUS and timed the time taken. Both will take approximately 2 hours. (T.T) This will be the first time in my entire life that I need that long to get to school. I am definitely not going to get used to it in e short run ad maybe even in the long run. ARGH!!! Why can't there be a shorter route to NUS?

Boring

Orientation talk is boring but essential. I have been seating in the same LT for 2 days already. By the way, I am still struck in it right now. I brought my laptop, that's why. (=p)

Been chatting with Leanne and Wan Xin since these morning and now they are gone. Have totally no idea where they went to. COME BACK!!

I watched The Dark Knight with a primary school friend last night. It was great. I want to watch it again. Christian Bale is really good looking and I have no idea why did they choose Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes. She looks old and doesn't match the superhero. The acting of Heath Ledger is great. He really gives me the creeps and when I thought he was finally caught, he came back again. I love the twist in the show. Really great. Highly recommended. (=D)

ARGH!!! I want to go home now!

My NECK

I can't turn my neck normally. I got a stiff neck now. (T_T) In the mid of tuition on Thursday, I realised my neck was very stiff and there was swelling on each side of my shoulder. Asked my mum to help me to massage a little when I reached home and the next day. Didn't get better and I had a very bad headache because of it so I headed to the Chinese physician for a session.

The physician told me it was due to sitting in front of the computer for too long and the swell was very bad because the stress on my shoulder was not from just a few days or weeks but months or perhaps the whole year. Well, I am quite oblivious when it comes to pain. (=P)

So it is to say that I actually experienced pain since weeks or months ago and I only realised it on Thursday. (-.-')

So she did the 'ba guan' [sorry, I don't know what is it known as in English and how to write in Chinese] and I was so shocked to see that one of the spot turned blue black with dark blood clot all over today. It is painful. Sob. Hopefully it will be better soon. *Pray*

Traumatised

Oh sh*t! I am so badly traumatised by this manga titled - Billion Girl. I am having a bad headache because I really cannot stand how the story goes. Firstly, the storyline is great. I love the tension that the author managed to build for every character but I cannot stand what the aunt did to the nephew. OMG. I am too serious when I watch dramas and read mangas.

But still I love the storyline. I just hope I won't get any nightmare cos of this. Argh!

To you know who you are

She will always be part of you and your family's lives. No matter where she is, she is alive in you. It is alright to feel sad and lost but remember she will hope for the best in all of you so live life to the fullest. You always have your family and us. (=])

Leanne's 21st celebration

First and foremost, the birthday girl - LEANNE!!! If I am not wrong, she was holding on to 50 helium balloons at that point of time when the photo was taken. She flew! LOL.

I was there at about 5pm to see if there was anything I could help and also to meet OUR students. (=D) The photo below was taken with our students by Leanne's brother cause Zhiyi was busying decorating. Hehe.

I decided not to upload too many photos. LOL. Will leave it for the birthday girl to update on her birthday but I really love her cake so, a photo of her cake. (=P)

And not forgetting a picture of the birthday girl with her cake and balloons. (=D)

The presents!!!

NUS bidding

I spent the last hour trying to plan my timetable for my first semester in NUS. I realised it is so hard to try to fit tutorials and lectures together without overlapping. Plus, tutorials are for balloting so it is either you get it or you don't. Modules have to bid so I also have no idea if I will get what I want. Hopefully yes and the QET (Qualifying English Test) is on this Friday.

I suddenly realised I am so unprepared for everything and I only know one person from FASS this year. Trying to be optimistic. ARGH!!!

The Bank Job

I watched the movie yesterday with Esther. Met her at City Hall MRT and walked to Marina Square to buy the tickets first before we headed to Swensens for lunch. She had curry baked rice and I had crayfish spaghetti executive meal. Hehe. I think Leanne must be thinking I kept eating crayfish. (=P)

The Bank Job is based on a true 1971 major robbery of a bank in London which all the robbers were not caught to date. It involved royal scandal, brothel business and corrupted police officers. The storyline is great but half the time I don't have an idea what they were talking about because of the strong British accent. Esther is better, only for a quarter of the time she could not make out what they were saying. LOL. This movie is really interesting and do watch only if you are 21 because it is R21 rated. (=P)

Spring-cleaning

I am exhausted. Been feeling giddy the whole morning and I feel even worse now. BUT I managed to do something I have been wanting to do - SPRING-CLEANING!!!

Actually I have been constantly doing spring cleaning but I always try to avoid the shelf beside my bed as it is very hard for me to clean the shelf when I am only entitled 20cm of space. So I decided to do it on my lunar birthday. (=P)

I cleaned the shelf and threw out a big bag of stuffs. I wiped the walls, the wires (plug, socket, etc), vacuumed the floor and mopped it with a cloth. Spent a total of 3 hours doing it and I feel like sleeping now but first I shall have my dinner first. So here I go.

Another round of inflation if companies increase wages

SINGAPORE : Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has warned that Singapore could face another round of inflation if companies increase wages to help workers cope with the higher cost of living today.

He said this will also affect Singapore’s competitiveness and the ability to create jobs.

Mr Tharman was speaking to some 500 workers at the Singapore Industrial and Services Employees’ Union dinner on Wednesday evening.

Higher rice and oil prices have led some Singaporeans to call on the government to set the tone by raising wages.

But Mr Tharman said such short—term measures are not prudent. Instead, he said the government has provided assistance to help Singaporeans deal with the higher cost of living.

These include S$500 million in GST Credits — to help citizens cope with the increased Goods and Services Tax — and special bonuses for senior citizens.

Mr Tharman said Singapore also addresses the problem of inflation mainly through its exchange rate policy. Since the beginning of last year, the Singapore dollar has appreciated by 11 per cent against the US dollar.

However, the minister said there is a limit to how much Singapore can allow its dollar to rise to fight inflation. Mr Tharman said if Singapore dramatically strengthens its dollar to offset the higher prices, it will instead hurt economic growth badly.

He said oil prices have increased by 50 per cent since the start of this year. And it has gone up by about 100 per cent compared to a year go. Food prices globally are now up to 60 per cent higher than one year ago.

Mr Tharman cautioned Singaporeans to brace themselves as oil prices may increase further.

He said, "We expect inflation to be between 5—6 per cent on average this year, with inflation being lower towards the end of the year. We also expect inflation in the second half of the year to be lower because the effects of last July’s GST increase on inflation will wear out.

"However, the recent sharp increase in global oil prices will add pressure on inflation. So we are monitoring this and the impact on inflation closely, and will decide if inflation forecasts for this year need to be revised."

Looking at the global situation, Mr Tharman said the weakness in the US economy could extend into next year. But he maintains that Singapore can expect Gross Domestic Product growth to average between four and six per cent this year.

Mr Tharman said the lasting solution to inflation is to continue with efforts to help workers upgrade their skills and earn better wages.

He said it is also important to help experienced, mature workers stay employed and help home—makers get back to work. This will not only increase the household income, but help improve Singapore’s tight labour market. — CNA/ms

Increase in pay = Inflation? That what about the massive wages increment early this year?
